know your rights

In 2021, after years of organizing and advocacy, we won legislation, SB746/HB894, that guarantees Maryland community college faculty and staff the right to form unions with collective bargaining rights. Starting in September 2022, community college employees can file for recognition of their union under this new legislation by showing that a majority of employees in their “bargaining unit” support forming a union.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING RIGHTS

IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO:

  • Participate in meetings to discuss joining the union and organizing
  • Distribute union materials in non-work areas on non-work time
  • Discuss the union with your co-workers (unless talking about anything is prohibited)
  • Circulate petitions or letters or join together in other activities to protest unfair treatment or demand improvements in wages, hours and working conditions
  • Organize other employees to support the union, sign union cards, file grievances and speak up for union recognition
  • Sign union cards or petitions and vote for the union

ADMINISTRATION CANNOT:

  • Question you about the union
  • Fire anyone or threaten to fire, layoff, discipline, harass, transfer or reassign an employee because they support the union
  • Promise employees a pay increase, promotion, benefit or special favor if they oppose the union
  • Favor employees who don’t support the union over those that do when it comes to promotions, hours, wages, enforcement of rules or any other conditions.
  • Close or threaten to discontinue your courses, place of employment, or take away benefits or privileges in order to discourage union activity.
  • Make any changes to your working conditions, benefits or wages once you’ve made your collective intention to unionize public.
