Community College of Baltimore County Faculty Unite to Form a Union, 6th Campus to join AFT MD in the past year

Baltimore, MD — 09/24/2024— The full-time faculty at Community College of Baltimore County have taken a significant step in strengthening their commitment to educational excellence by forming a union through United Academics of Maryland, a local of AFT and AAUP. The faculty at CCBC marks the 6th community college in Maryland joining AFT in the past year, with over a thousand full-time faculty unionizing in the state. CCBC joins the faculty at Frederick County Community College, Howard County Community College, Prince George County Community College, Chesapeake County Community College, and Cecil County Community College.

“By forming this union, we are not only honoring the traditions and achievements of CCBC, but also striving to build upon them,” said Jay Trucker, English Professor. “Our goal is to ensure that faculty perspectives are actively included in shaping the future of the college, which will, in turn, benefit our students and the broader community.”

Contract negotiations will center around protecting academic freedom, strengthening faculty voice in campus decision making, and fair pay. Such issues include curriculum development, faculty resources, and student support services. The Union is hopeful the administration meets the faculty with a collaborative approach to bargaining, strengthening CCBC’s community.

AFT is the largest higher education union in the country, representing over 400,000 faculty and staff across the country. Over 70% of all unionized faculty are members of the AFT. In Maryland, AFT MD members are found on over 7 community colleges and remains a strong advocate in Annapolis for faculty rights and protections.
